Conseils locaux
Conseils d'initiés
Walk Al-Balad in the evening: a working quarter that comes alive after dark, with better light on the old facades.
The corniche is a night place: families arrive after the evening prayer and stay late; afternoons are empty.
Jeddah Season runs in summer; its dates change every year.
Coutumes et sécurité
Shops and restaurants close briefly and predictably at each of the five prayers; plan the day around it.
The sea makes the city humid, not dry, so summer outdoors is harder than the temperature suggests.
Repas et prière
All food sold in the country is halal. Pork and alcohol are not sold at all, hotels included.
Mosques are in every district and along the corniche; prayer rooms are in malls, offices and the airport.

À propos de Djeddah
Jeddah was a port before it was anything else, and it still reads as one. Al-Balad is a few streets of old trading houses set back from the water, and the rest of the city has grown north along the sea from it.
It is warm and humid rather than baking, and it never really cools: a January night here is milder than a spring afternoon on the plateau. That is why the corniche is an evening city and why winter is the season.
