Conseils locaux

  • Conseils d'initiés

    1. Walk Muharraq rather than drive it: its narrow old streets are the one place here not built for cars.

    2. See the National Museum before the fort: the finds are there, and the fort makes far more sense after.

  • Argent

    1. The currency is the Bahraini dinar, and cards work almost everywhere.

  • Coutumes et sécurité

    1. Modest dress in public (shoulders and knees covered), more so in Muharraq and the older neighbourhoods.

    2. May to September is extreme and humid, with no natural shade on the islands; everything happens indoors or after dark.

  • Repas et prière

    1. Islam is the state religion and halal the norm; a hotel serving otherwise does so in a separate, labelled part.

    2. Mosques are everywhere in Manama, prayer rooms in malls and the airport; shops close briefly at each prayer.

Se déplacer à ⁨Bahreïn⁩

  • Voiture

The country can be crossed in under an hour and everything is reached by road, including the causeway to the mainland.

    Recommandé

  • VTC

Ride-hailing covers the islands and settles the fare in the app.

  • Taxi

Plentiful in Manama, and the usual way between it and Muharraq.

À propos de ⁨Bahreïn⁩

Bahrain is islands, not a coast, and small enough that the whole country is an hour across. Manama and Muharraq face each other over a short stretch of water; the west side holds the fort and the burial fields; and the causeway to Saudi Arabia leaves from the north-west.

The island's past runs very deep. The fort on the north coast is a tell (a mound of successive settlements), and UNESCO inscribed it as the ancient harbour and capital of Dilmun, which puts the country's recorded history several thousand years back.
