Conseils locaux
Conseils d'initiés
Work along the corniche in one direction. The city is long and thin, and zig-zagging spends the day in traffic.
Choose the fish first and the cooking second; that is how the seafront restaurants work.
Coutumes et sécurité
Alexandria genuinely rains in winter and some streets flood, so a coat and waterproof shoes earn their space.
Repas et prière
Halal is the norm, as across Egypt; the cooking is seafood, bought at the counter and grilled while you wait.
Mosques are in every district and along the corniche; shopping centres and larger hotels keep prayer rooms.

À propos de Alexandrie
Alexandria is the one Egyptian city that faces the Mediterranean, and the difference is not only the view. It is cooler and much wetter than the rest of the country, it was Greek and then Roman before it was anything else, and its layers are under the streets rather than out in the desert.
The city is arranged along one long curve of seafront. The eastern harbour and the Qaitbay fort anchor the old end; the library and the newer districts run east from it; and almost everything worth seeing is within a few streets of that line.
