Local tips
Insider tips
Give a day to Al-Ahsa. People live on the coast; the oasis is what the region is about.
If the trip continues to Bahrain, the causeway is the crossing, and a journey in itself.
Customs and safety
Shops and restaurants close briefly and predictably at each of the five prayers; plan the day around it.
Gulf summer is humid as well as extreme, so being outside is harder than in the drier interior heat.
Food and prayer
All food sold in the country is halal. Pork and alcohol are not sold at all, hotels included.
Mosques are across all three towns, and prayer rooms are in the malls, the offices and the airport.
Getting around Dammam
Car
Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran run together and are covered by road; so is everything inland.

About Dammam
Dammam is really one built-up stretch with Khobar and Dhahran, and a visit moves between them without noticing where one ends. The water is on one side, the desert on the other, and the oasis is inland from both.
This is the Gulf, not the Red Sea: shallow, flat and much hotter in summer, with humidity on top of the heat. The region's interest is the oasis and the older settlements rather than the shoreline.
