Local tips
Insider tips
Go up to the Citadel late in the afternoon: better light, and the whole city laid out below.
Walk downtown in the morning while the market is working. By evening it is a different, quieter place.
Customs and safety
Amman is at 776 metres: cool January days, common rain, snow that closes the city some years. Pack for it.
Downtown to the Citadel is a short distance and a long climb, and many streets are stepped.
Food and prayer
Islam is the state religion and halal is the norm; some restaurants and hotels serve alcohol, never as the default.
Mosques in every district, the call to prayer carrying across the valleys; prayer rooms at the airport and malls.

About Amman
Amman is built over hills and the geography decides everything about moving around it. The old downtown is at the bottom of a valley; the districts are on the ridges above, and getting from one to another means going down and up rather than across.
Amman works as much as a base as a destination. Jerash is an hour north, the Dead Sea an hour west, and Petra three hours south, so two nights here can cover far more than the city itself.
